Borobudur Temple

The name of Borobudur still contains many interpretation, many theories try to explain the name of this temple. One of them states that the name of this possibility comes from the word Sambharabhudhara, which means “gunung/mountain” (bhudara) where the slope-terrace is located terraces. In addition, there are also some other people etymology. Suppose Borobudur comes from the greeting “Para Buddha” because of the shift in sound to be Borobudur.

Another explanation is that this name comes from two words “bara” and “beduhur”. The word “bara” seems derived from the word Vihara. Another explanation, “bara” is derived from Sanskrit which means temple or monastery complex, and “beduhur” meaning is “tinggi/high”; or on the Bali language which means “di atas/above”. Thus, Borobudur means “monastery on the hill” that may be identified with a mountain of terraced (budhara). Other sources say Borobudur means “monastery located in the high places”.

Historians J.G. de Casparis in his dissertation for a Doctorate degree in 1950 argued that Borobudur is a place of worship. Based on the Karangtengah and Kahulunan inscription. Casparis estimate, Borobudur founder is the king of Syailendra dynasty called Samaratungga around 824 M. Building a new giant that can be completed during the daughter’s power, named Ratu Pramudawardhani. Borobudur development is estimated to take half a century.
